Premiered at the Festival d’Automne 2023 as a carte blanche given to Alice Diop, Le Voyage de la Vénus Noire is a reading by Kayije Kagame of the epilogue to Robin Coste Lewis’s Voyage of the Sable Venus and Other Poems. This short prose text not only offers a radical re-interpretation of the history of art, but also enlightens the entire project of the author, one of the most important poets on the American scene. A woman travels the world’s museums in her dreams at night. She sets off in search of the fragmented bodies of all those black women who have populated the margins of paintings since the Renaissance. Poetic and political, this journey brings Alice Diop and Kayije Kagame together again after their collaboration on the set of the film Saint Omer, which won the Silver Lion and the Lion of the Future at the 2022 Venice Film Festival.
