How do you pass on a love of classical theatre? In 2018 François Gremaud took up the challenge posed by Théâtre de Vidy and produced Phèdre ! in which he interweaves his writing with that of Racine, with Romain Daroles in mind, to whom he dedicates the role. The combination of all these loves – for theatre, for Racine’s heroine, for the performer – has transformed the tragedy into a lecture steeped in passion. Alone on stage, text in hand, Daroles, like a schoolmaster, joyfully and delicately engages with the story of Phèdre, entering into the skin of each character, getting carried away and traversing the intrigues of love and words, and possessed by a love of words, marvelling at the Alexandrine that he unearths beneath the passions… For five years Phèdre ! has been spreading the flawless art of joy and theatre.
