Thomas Hauert’s last solo dates back to 2015. Almost a decade later, the Swiss dancer now unveils Troglodyte, Zaungast/Zaunkönig at La Bâtie. The starting point for this new solo is a complex psychological enigma. The piece experiments with the position of the outsider. The German word “Zaungast”, literally “the guest of the fence”, is used to describe a person who attends an event from afar to which he or she has not been invited, thus remaining behind the fence. “Zaunkönig”, literally “the king of the fence”, is the German name for the wren, a small songbird. Tiny but kingly at the same time, it is imagined to be “on the fence” in the sense of the English expression, i.e. undecided and uncommitted.
