Parallax
Theater
A grandmother, her daughter, and her son. Three generations in a small Budapest flat. Three approaches to the experience of Jewishness. While the grandmother refuses the medal of honour awarded to survivors of the Shoah, her daughter looks for proof of her Jewish identity in order to get a better school for her son; and the son looks for his own identity as a homosexual. What they have in common are the same questions: can we free ourselves from the constraints of identity? When is identity a privilege, when is it a burden? With Parallax (parallax is the effect of the observer’s changing position on what they perceive), Hungarian director Kornél Mundruczó and his independent company Proton Theatre use this family tale to paint a moral portrait of Eastern European Jews and of those in Hungary who suffer from the countless repressions imposed on the LGBTQ+ community. The parallels between generations are poignantly topical.
