In 2007, Mamela Nyamza made a name for herself with a moving, no-holds-barred solo. Openly autobiographical, Hatched tackled issues relating to the changing identity and sexuality of female stage performers, spotlighting one of the most unique voices on the South African dance scene. Hatched Ensemble takes up this body-political endeavour, bringing together ten ballet-trained dancers, opera singer Lito Nqai, and traditional African musician Azah. In a wild and exhilarating movement of liberation, the music brings out of these bodies, forged by Western classical dance, the corseted narratives of their identities, celebrating the rite of a new spring.
