Based in Berlin, an iconic city for sound research, Maya Shenfeld broke onto the contemporary music scene with the release of her debut LP In Free Fall (2022). Her sophomore album Under the Sun (2024), in which she builds bridges between the past and the future through a series of pieces that alternate between change and repetition, deep time and ephemeral vision, balance and imminent threat confirms the composer’s outstanding talent. Through her contemplative and ethereal music – and in particular through the field recordings that she made in a Portuguese quarry under a blazing sun and that she integrated into her tracks – the artist invites her audience to rethink their relationship with the environment. It’s also interesting to note that sound and silence are of equal importance to the artist who skilfully blends electroacoustic research and sacred music to create a depth of listening conducive to questioning. At Saint-Gervais temple, where she’ll be performing Under the Sun in its entirety, her music will interact perfectly with the images created especially for this album by director Pedro Maia.
