We all know the story of a wooden puppet who wanted to become a real little boy. But what does that mean, to become a boy? And what’s a real boy? More to the point, what’s a real boy made of? In The Making of Pinocchio, Rosana Cade and Ivor MacAskill revisit all these questions and more, updating Collodi’s tale in light of their own story of love and transition. In a fictitious film studio, the creative machinery of their work and gender is joyfully set in motion in a clever interplay of scale and perspective. They welcome a cricket, a whale, a fairy, and Geppetto, whom they strip of their morals with some dazzlingly funny and sincere confidences.
