Marta Górnicka PL
Mothers. A song for wartime
Theater
They come from Kyiv, Sumy Irpin, and Kherson. They range in age from 9 to 72. They sing. First a gentle shchedrivka, an ancient Ukrainian New Year’s song reserved for women and children, then louder and louder, poems, incantations, and lullabies. With their voices, with their bodies, with all the power of their choir, they resist. Polish director Marta Górnicka brings to life the rites of women’s choirs from the 7th century BC with 21 survivors and witnesses to the violence and bombardment of war in Europe. Today, they use the power of their voices to name the unspeakable and defend the roots of their culture. They look at us, they aren’t afraid. Let’s hear them!
A discussion will be held after the show on Friday 30th of August.
In response to the humanitarian situation caused by the war in Ukraine, the Comédie de Genève and La Bâtie-Festival de Genève have joined forces to donate an amount equivalent to 10% of the show's fee to SEMA Ukraine, which has been fighting sexual violence against women since the start of the war.
